Harvest Monday - April 30, 2012. First Harvest!!

Technically, this is not the first harvest of the season.  We almost always harvest chives for baked potatoes in March, but I did not bother to post that. Chives grow like weeds in my garden(although they are so flavorful and I love them)!  I don't really consider them as harvest anymore.  So Asparagus is our First Harvest of the season!!  Check out Daphne's Dandelions for everyone else's harvests.

We lost earlier Asparagus crowns to frost that followed the warm March month.  Still, this is not bad at all for the first harvest.  An impending frost forecast compelled me to harvest everything above ground.

Several Green and One Purple(top) crowns!

A view of Asparagus beds.......

Bed #2.  Look closely at the tiny sticks, they're all crowns emerging :)
Check out the purple asparagus crown!

  1. I just stumbled across your blog...I'm jealous of your asparagus! We transplanted ours and killed it. Sigh. No asparagus this year. I'm in metro-Detroit and also have 3 kids and do the bulk of the gardening work. My kids mostly UNdo my work! lol Looking forward to reading more from you as the season progresses.

  2. Ms Dorothy ^^ pointed me to your page. I'm quite the random gardener, too (with 3 kids AND vocal hubby). I'm in the eastern 'burbs, probably not far from you. I'm looking forward to see how your gardening progresses after our crazy winter and spring. -M

    1. Thanks for visiting my site! Every year is a different experience in the garden --- crazy weather, ambitious deer, visiting bugs and rodents etc., :)

  3. Oh yum... I can't wait to be able to harvest asparagus. We started some from seed this year, so it is going to be awhile before we can taste the fruits of our labor.

The bottom ends of yours are so thick, at least compared to the tasteless ones you get at the grocery store. Do you have to trim those up at all?

    1. They weren't fibrous, so we could eat up the entire harvest :) They were nutty and yummy, we ate them all up the same evening!

It did take a while to start getting harvests, but we're glad we planted them few years back!

  4. I've been getting a spear here and there, but nothing to boast about. Maybe next year. And I planted some Purple Passion this year, but they are sure tiny and spindly yet/

  5. We planted the purple ones last year. They were 2 yr old roots, so I am getting 1-2 crowns/week :)

  8. I've been thinking about growing asparagus; the more I see, the more I'm tempted to do so. Your crop looks tasty. Are they difficult to care for?
