Harvest Monday - July 23, 2012

I haven't posted anything in over a month!  That's because we were on a vacation to the other side of the world!  I will make another post on how the garden looked when I got back.  For now, it is all about what I harvested in the last week.

The first task when I got back(other than weeding) was to pull garlic as the plants had turned brown and some of the browns had disintegrated!  They were not as large as last year, and I attribute that for lack of water/hot weather/non removal of garlic scapes which prevented a large bulb from forming.  This year, I plan to plant back most of the garlic in the fall and expand my garlic garden :)

For everyone else's harvests of the week, head on over to Daphne's Dandelions!

More Garlic

Radish pods and white Radishes

  1. Those turnips look lovely! Reminds me, I need to find a spot to sow some of them for autumn...
And I miss white radishes - I used to grow ridiculous amounts of them when I was a kid, more than we could ever eat!

    1. Thank you! I planted these turnips after a gap of few years! Same packet though, so it was nice to see them germinate and produce something:)

    1. Yes, it's always wonderful to see the garden in full swing, when the only thing you've done is seed them! Ofcourse that and the automatic sprinkler system:)

  4. All my spring planted turnips bolted on me this year, so I am envious of your nice turnip harvest. Well done, and welcome back home after your travels.

    1. I have only 2 blackberry plants and out of these only one has ever produced some berries! As for harvesting berries, I guess you just pluck them when they're black:) If you meant how to grow the plants, well, we are in zone 4, so not really a good zone for blackberry plants to overwinter. Zone 5 or more is recommended. I take some effort and wrap the entire plant with some newspapers or something warm to help it withstand our cold weather. It has helped so far in the last 2 years!

  7. Looking good! What do you do with the turnips? I have a ton too, but haven't harvested them yet because I don't know how to use them. Also, are radish pods edible? I let the go to seed. I'm envious of your garlic, mine didn't make it through the winter. Where do you buy your garlic bulbs for planting?

    1. Amy, I use turnips mostly in anything (spicy) instead of potatoes. I've tried a couple of recipes so far, they worked well. Yes, radish pods are edible, they crispy and crunchy and very nutritious too! I bought my one and only bulb at Mpls farmers market 2 yrs back!

    2. Great, thanks for the tips! Did you buy the garlic specifically as a "seed" bulb, or did you just use a regular garlic bulb you bought at the Farmers Market?

    3. Yes, it was just a regular garlic. I asked the lady selling those, if I could plant it and she said yes. Cost me $1/bulb:)

  9. That's a great harvest for having been away for so long. I'm interested to see what happened in the garden in your absence. It's amazing how quickly things seem to grow, even when you are away for just a few days.
