Asparagus.....first of the season!

I was working in the garden and didn't even notice this.  Look very closely.........
You can see two asparagus spears which are quite long, but it was just a coincidence that I spotted them!  I had planted two year old roots last spring and was delighted to see the spears so soon in the season.  Asparagus is one of the earliest harvests of the season, but it still caught me by surprise......

First 3 spears of Asparagus.....

There were only 3 spears that could be harvested at this time.  But I do see more spears poking out of the dirt...  For other harvests of the week, head on over to Daphne's Harvest Mondays........

  1. Glad to see your asparagus! I just love the stuff, especially grilled!I need to get some patience and plant some. I finally commited to rhubarb this year. I put out 3 crowns. Something ate the leave off the first one, it growing back slowly and the other two have 1 little stalk each and nice leaves. I will just have to suck it up till next year! Great blog! I'll be back!

  4. No kids here so we get to eat all the asparagus ourselves. Good you can get the kids to eat it!

  5. Andrea - There's many ways we use asparagus - mostly we grill it or saute it with olive oil and seasonings or use it in different curries. Changing seasonings makes a huge difference in its taste.

Villager - If not for the kids, I wouldn't plant as much asparagus as I did! In a couple years, we should have plenty of homegrown asparagus for us (and for others, maybe:))
