First (Measly) Harvest for 2011

Chives!!  Garlic Chives and regular Chives are perennials in our region and they've come up already!  I was able to harvest some of both and use it on baked potatoes over the weekend.  I had started these chives a year before from seeds and they've been continuing to grow on their own since then.  I'm not really sure what else to use these for other than drying them.  We mostly use them to season potatoes over at our house.  Head on over to Daphne's Harvest Mondays to check out other harvests for the week.

  1. My regular chives died while I was vacationing over Christmas, so I keep checking out the area where they would come up... just waiting! I use garlic chives in and as a garnish for pad thai (http://importfood.com/recipes/tstirfryNoodle.html).

I just stumbled on your blog from Daphne's, and i love your profile, feels like my gardening style as well. =)

  3. My absolutely favorite thing to do with chives is to snip them into scrambled eggs before I cook them. So delicious!!!

  4. Chives are my favorite herb...I don't have any garlic chives, but I have a friend who's willing to share a piece of her plant. I love garlic too!

  5. Thanks Tiny Gardener for that tip! I will try that next time.

Katrina - It's nice to have a friend who's willing to share! I found that chives are very easy to grow. It's grown substantially, so I would like to share the plant with someone now!

  6. I wish I could harvest my chives. I planted them last fall, from small plants from my last house. I need to let them grow up a bit first I think though. They had a hard life in the move last year.

  7. I love how perennials come up so early and make themselves useful in early spring! For some reason I couldn't get chives to grow well last year, but I will be trying again this year.

  8. BTW, I collected cilantro seeds from my plants last year. If you'd like, I can send some seeds to you. I couldn't find your email address on your blog, but if email me (address in my blog profile) your mailing address and I can get them out to you this weekend!

  9. Daphne - I think you'll be able to harvest chives soon enough. They grow really fast and through the entire season!

thyme2garden - Hope your chives grow well(like your cilantro!) Thanks for you offer of cilantro seeds. You're very kind! I was more interested in how you got them to grow so well(weather/fertilizer/soil etc.,) I do have seeds from a friend(whose cilantro grew 4-5 ft as well) and then I purchased a packet for 20c at Walmart, so I've planted both of them, waiting for them to sprout. Last year, the one from my friend bolted when it was 2-3 inches(: So I'm not sure what weather/soil it needs to grow 4-5ft. I've started early spring, this year, so hopefully it will grow well. Maybe it needs cool weather? I'll experiment, until I get it right. We love cilantro and cannot have enough of them!

  10. Anything green from the garden makes me salivate this time of year. Nice chives. I have some coming up along with sorrel and some lost garlic I think the previous owners planted and wild leeks. It's all asking to be turned into a green sauce.

  11. Hello,
I have been looking at other MN blogs and found yours! I live in the southern suburbs too (Savage). When I first read the title of this post I thought "What, first harvest in MN!?!?" LOL. My chives are popping now too, I need to get out there and clean up the dead growth from last year. I was planning on working in the gardens this weekend....but now it'll be too cold.

I'm looking forward to reading future posts from you!
